Sen. Tom Harkin & Others on Stem Cell Research Press Conference
Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA), Senator Arlen Specter (R-PA), Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT), Representative Diana DeGette (D-CO), and Representative Mike Castle (R-DE) hold a press conference on the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act.
Click C-span video here: The time has come, let’s get this job done!
Pennsylvania Republican Sen. Arlen Specter, who has repeatedly expressed outrage that Bush will not support the expanded use of federal funds for human embryonic stem cell research, said he was "confident" it would pass the Senate with enough votes to override any White House veto.
"There ought to be a million-person march on the Mall … that can be heard in the living quarters of the White House," he said.
Stem cell backers predict success in new Congress
BTW, Deceptive media again…….everyone claims this is a new source of stem cells……NOT AT ALL!!!!
That claim was already made in 2003. See here:
Markus Henstschläger and colleagues at the University of Vienna, Austria, found that some cells in the amniotic fluid taken from pregnant women during routine amniocentesis expressed a key protein called Oct-4. This is needed to keep ESCs in their state of perpetual youth. Further investigation showed that other important proteins were also expressed.
Henstschläger’s team say their work shows human amniotic fluid "may represent a new source for stem cells without raising the "ethical" concerns associated with human embryonic research".
To me it’s unethical to trash ESC at IVF clinics rather than use them in lifesaving research. It is Pro-Life to help the living with recycled cells.
